AWOLNATION ~ "Here Come The Runts" Album Review
By: Katie Hovde
I’m sure you read the title of this post and thought of the gritty futuristic and annoyingly persistent sounds of the summer 2011 Awolnation hit “Sail.” I too, wanted very little to do with that song and the band after hearing it at least 800 times per day for a solid 6 months. So I didn’t have the highest of hopes for their new album ‘Here Come the Runts’. But I was hooked from the first track.
The whole album has got a Jack White vibe, if you took Jack White’s sound and draped it in velvet and a thin shroud of Dashboard Confessional. From start to the aptly named final track, this album requests you surrender just a little bit of your tread and let the train ride of the album carry you from beginning to end. Some stand out tracks are “Miracle Man,” a motivating, Cake-esque head-bobber; “Table for One,” a pleasantly melancholy little track; and the gritty, epic “Seven Sticks of Dynamite.”
One of the most refreshing things about this album is the distinction in tone between each track. Too many albums being released today are composed of back to back songs that all sound exactly alike. ‘Here Come the Runts’ is perfectly variegated and cohesive, offering the listener and easily accessible interactive emotional journey
